Honest, Fair and Objective Reviews
of Quilling Books
I'm
going to guess that you are frustrated with your quilling patterns.... You often
admire other people's fine quilling displays, but then wonder why
you can't reproduce the same? I'm also going to guess that you have
bought Quilling and other Paper Craft books before, but only to be
disappointed when it came to the content? Hey, you're not
alone. I have been there, and been hurt before, but now I would like the truth
to be exposed for all to see.
Far too many
Mediocre Quilling Books out there. Its really frustrating, and it irritates me, frankly!
Look,
I'm no quilling expert. I don't expect any of you have ever heard of me. But the
truth is I can help you out. I've purchased and used most of the quilling books that have come along over the last few years. While
there are a few outstanding books that can help you advance and make some
wonderful works of art with quilling, there's a lot of garbage out there
that's a complete waste of your time and money.
I started working with books from the local library, and second hand books I
found at craft fairs. These are still many good books to be found
this way, but searching for them is nigh on impossible. Many have
patterns which are impossible to follow. They give you the finished
picture along with a few lines about how to achieve it, and which
coils and scrolls you'll need..... but that's all! You are then left
to fend for yourself. Let me tell you how frustrating that can be!
You know what it should look like, but your quilled creations just
don't seem to match the desired outcome. With persistence and determination, I've managed to
overcome my lack of talent, and now my quilled creations are
something I am definitely proud of. By studying many, many quilling
books, both online and offline, I've been able to sort
out the useful information from the fluff and I can help you do the
same.
I've narrowed down the
Quilling Books search for you
With these
reviews and recommendations, I've narrowed down the search for you
significantly. I'm able to identify the few books that stand out and
offer the most useful information. I've also considered value for money. Not all
quillers have an abundance of spare cash to splash around, so I've
really considered the overall package in each case. By that I mean,
looking at what additional books, patterns and bonuses are given
away to the purchaser. Believe me, some are good, some bad, some
downright ugly.

Great Paper Quilling - Mickey Baskett
Rating:

Score: 87%
Cost: $34.50
Type: Physical book
Bonuses: None
Guarantee: Return via Amazon
When I
received Great
Paper Quilling I realised that this was a book which
would definitely help both myself and my daughter. It gives you the basics including what equipment
is required but it also shows a great number of techniques
thus giving the reader a real insight into this ancient
craft. Quilling is a craft which can be enjoyed by young and
old and this publication ensures that both age groups are
fully enthused and instructed. In fact my daughter loves the
patterns which are well suited for children. Patterns included
enable most Quillers to copy designs in the book exactly or using little
or a lot of imagination they can adapt them according to
their level of skill. Great Paper Quilling has been written
in a way that does not demean those beginning and neither is
so basic that it's unsuitable for advanced quillers. If
anyone is looking to start a craft this is the book that
they should be looking at to ensure that they do not go
wrong, then once the basic skills are gained they can adapt
all the patterns to their own designs. In summary this
excellent book will appeal to all levels of quillers and
even those who are looking for a new craft cannot fail to be
impressed with the presentation. Definitely a book for craft
lovers everywhere. 4 stars awarded.

Quilling
Magic Volumes 1, 2 and 3 - Claire Harris
Rating:

Score:
92%
Cost: $37.00
Type: Ebook
Bonuses: Quilling Magic volumes 2, 3. Profitable Crafts volumes 1, 2, 3, 4,
404 Self Improvement Tips plus some further unadvertised bonuses
Guarantee: 8 weeks return policy
Claire Harris burst on to the quilling scene by storm in January 2007
with not one, but three book entitled Quilling Magic.
She takes quilling to a whole new level. Her success was partly
down to the huge army of quillers she employed to help her
produce volumes 2 and 3 which show boat many of the contributors
patterns and designs. Quilling Magic is not simply a book
written by one person, but rather it is a collection of the most
treasured quilling projects and patterns that every quiller will
be proud to own. The first thing which struck me about the
Quilling Magic package is the sheer size of it. Quilling
Magic comes in three volumes covering every known technique,
a large number of patterns and a large collection of
inspirational contributions from quillers all over the world.
However, the real surprise is in all the unadvertised bonuses
which come at no extra charge whatsoever. I cannot say too much
about what these are, but suffice to say you will truly
appreciate them and treasure them as much as the main
Quilling Magic books. Not only do you get all the basics
(and I really mean ALL the basics including every scroll, coil
and loop imaginable) covered in volume 1, you also get a huge
section on advanced tips and techniques as well as sections on
3D quilling and quilling for all the family. It really is a joy
to read and something I cannot put down. The 3D structures are
great. The family love them, as they are sturdy enough to stand
on their own. I didn't realise there were so many different
varieties of quilling paper available. My daughter loves making
folded roses, which were new to her, but she has now combined
them with double rolled coils to great effect. Personally, I am
hooked on the fringed flowers, and have now learnt the secrets
to creating them without a fringer. Once you know this
technique, it is far easier and the results are more
eye-catching. I learnt so much from reading this collection of
books including so many variations of quilling which I never
knew existed. Platting, spills and spiral roses to name a few.
The patterns are simply fantastic. They are so varied, unlike
your typical quilling book which just has endless flowers,
cards, more flowers and more cards. Volume 2 of Quilling
Magic contains some really unusual patterns, including 3D
structures that you simply will not find anywhere else. That is
why it gets my vote of approval. 5 stars awarded.

Quilling Made Easy - Sam Brown
Rating:

Score:
70%
Cost: $39.95
Type: Ebook
Bonuses: None
Guarantee: 90 day money back guarantee
Quilling
Made Easy is aimed very much at beginners. Scrolls,
coils, loops, hearts, teardrops etc. all the basic shapes are covered
in detail. Quilling Made Easy does exactly what it says on
the cover. It makes quilling easy to do. Overall its not a
bad ebook, but I would say that if you've got at least some
basic knowledge of quilling already you may find it a tad
disappointing. Don't get me wrong, if you are a beginner,
then you will definitely learn a huge amount. But if you are
more experienced, you may prefer to consider one of the
other volumes. What this book does do very well is break the
steps of paper filigree down into manageable chunks. It uses
drawings and photos to great effect to describe the
mini-steps involved when following a quilling pattern. This
could be a huge advantage if you are just getting started
and perhaps have struggled with some of the more advanced
patterns available elsewhere. 3 stars awarded.

Quilling Success - Teresa
Leys
Rating:

Score: 73%
Cost: $37.00
Type: Ebook
Bonuses: Profitable Crafts volumes 1, 2, 3, 4
Guarantee: 8 weeks money back guarantee.
Quilling Success was published in August
2005. Originally written by a French freelancer, and edited by
Chris Freville, but then the complete works were transferred to
Teresa Leys. Teresa created her own style with the book and
tried her best to cater for the beginner and more advanced
quiller alike. I found this book had something for everyone. The
history of quilling was very detailed, and so were the
explanations on how to start your own quilling business. There
are many crafters out there who would love to have their own
little crafting empire. Quilling Success contains a very
comprehensive section on running your own craft business,
including obtaining finance and setting up a workshop. Teresa
Leys has done well to adapt the rest of the book into something
she can be proud of. I was of the original customers that bought
Quilling Success when it first came out, and there were many
grammatical errors which I can only attribute to the French
freelancer. The second edition is a vast improvement on the
original, including many additional patterns. My favorite
patterns were the Christmas decorations which really went down a
treat in our household. I remember making so many of them, as we
were simply hooked on quilling. 3 stars awarded.

Quilling for Beginners - Jean Woolston-Hamey
Rating:

Score:
87%
Cost: $19.00
Type: Physical book
Bonuses: None
Guarantee: Return via Amazon
An
excellent book for beginners. Wonderful photos throughout. Jean
really takes care in ensuring her readers thoroughly understand
how to get the basics right. There is no point trying to create
advanced quilling masterpieces if you cannot master the basics.
We are shown the simple steps of quilling with easy-to-follow
instructions. We are also shown how to develop the skills to
create wonderful quilled cards, tags, plagues, picture frames to
name a few. Each project is illustrated in full colour and
includes helpful hints to improve your quilling. The projects in
Quilling for Beginners
are graded to develop your skills so that once you have mastered
these patterns. I believe once you have mastered the basics you
will have very little trouble taking on more challenging
projects from other quilling books. 4 stars awarded.

Quilling for
Scrapbooks & Cards - Susan Lowman
Rating:

Score:
82%
Cost: $19.95
Type: Physical book
Bonuses: None
Guarantee: Return via Amazon
This is the best quilling book for scrapbookers and card
makers that I have seen on the market.
However, if you're going to use or give it as a gift, if not
already familiar with quilling, make sure to also purchase
something more comprehensive such as Claire Harris's Definitive
Guide to Quilling (aka Quilling Magic volumes 1, 2, 3). Susan's
book Quilling for Scrapbooks & Cards has bright color
photos throughout encourage the would-be artist. For
scrapbookers she shows wonderful and funny ideas for pages for
vacations, school days, hobbies, weddings, etc. All the designs
are doable by even the most inexperienced, such as myself!
However,
most quillers agree that folded roses require lots of practice
-- but this book is the first I've ever seen without even
diagrams. 4 stars awarded.
